Maassa ollessaan laitteet tuottavat pahimmillaan 110 dB \u00e4\u00e4nenpaineen lent\u00e4j\u00e4n p\u00e4\u00e4n kohdalle. Moottorin ohella noin 3000 kierrosta minuutissa py\u00f6riv\u00e4 suurehko potkuri on varsin kova\u00e4\u00e4ninen. Ilmassa ollessaan ilmavirta painaa metelin taakse, jolloin \u00e4\u00e4ni ei ole en\u00e4\u00e4 h\u00e4iritsev\u00e4. Lennon aikana \u00e4\u00e4ni jonka lent\u00e4j\u00e4 kuulee (korvatulppien l\u00e4pi) on tasainen, varsin rauhallinen hurina. Variometrin \u00e4\u00e4nisignaali sek\u00e4 radio ovat kuultavissa hyvin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Korkeasta melutasostaan johtuen kuulon suojaus on ensisijaisen t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, Kyp\u00e4r\u00e4 vaimentaa melua v\u00e4h\u00e4n, mutta kunnollisten kuulosuojaimien k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 on pakollista. Aiemmin mainittujen suljettujen, leukasuojalla varustettujen kyp\u00e4r\u00f6iden kanssa ainoa vaihtoehto kuulon suojaukseen ovat kertak\u00e4ytt\u00f6iset korvatulpat. For safety and comfort, a bunch of other equipment are needed, or are even mandatory to use. With any piece of equipment the pilot must be keep in mind that everything that is taken with, must be secured or attached so, that they can not fall. Any item that is dropped, flies through the pusher propeller damaging it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Helmet<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The helmet is the most important and mandatory piece of equipment. The reasons to use it are self-explanatory. There are plenty of helmets available that are manufactured specially for sports aviation which are recommended over for example, motocross helmets. What makes the air sports helmets special is their low weight and different needs in safety. As hang glider pilots often fly prone, the pilots neck is loaded by the weight of the head and helmet during the whole flight which sets the weight requirements for the helmets. The helmets are often made of carbon- and kevlar fibers.<\/p>\n<p>Both open face and full-face, so called integral helmets, are sold for hang gliding. Due to the prone position, there is a risk, that in case of failed take-off or landing, the pilots face and especially chin touches the ground. For this reason an integral helmet with chin protector is practically the only choice for hang gliding if the pilot flies with prone harness. The chin protection is not important when flying in seated position. Open-face helmets with prone units are not recommended at all.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the most known manufacturers of the helmets are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finsterwalder-charly.de\/html_eng\/helme\/helme.php\">Finsterwalder Charly<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icaro2000.com\/Products\/Helmets\/All-models.htm\">Icaro 2000<\/a>. The helmets cost between 100 to 400 euros. Recommended models from Finsterwalderin for powered hang gliding are No Limit ja Insider. Icaro has similar integral helmets available: 4fight LT Integral, Grid LT Integral, 4fight Cut, \u00a0Grid Cut, Cut 3 and Skyrunner. Open-face helmets that are available from both manufacturers are suitable for paragliding and flying in seated position.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Eye protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As hang gliders do not have a cockpit or windshield of any kind, the pilot is completely exposed to the open air. As the gliders airspeed can reach up to 100 km\/h, eye protection becomes an important safety factor, being not only a matter of comfort. When the flights with powered gliders can last over four hours, the stress that the wind chill causes to pilot&#8217;s eyes is tremendous. It is possible to fly without glasses for short flights, like during the training but longer flights are not recommended in any way. The wind chill is not the only factor that causes stress to the eyes. Bright sunlight and airborne debris also are harmful. Glasses with real glass lenses may pose a threat in possibe hard landings. When flying a powered unit, the securing of the glasses must also be considered. The most important factor when picking the right eye protection is that the glasses or goggles must not get fogged. They must be also high quality in optical terms. Usually goggles which are designed for winter sports such as snowmobile driving with a double lens with anti-fog treatment, are suitable for hang-gliding. Some goggles, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scott-sports.com\/gb_en\/category\/9942\/goggles\">Scottin 80-series<\/a>, can be fitted with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scott-sports.com\/gb_en\/category\/9941\/goggle_accessories\">face mask<\/a>, which prevents wind chill to the face. The face mask provides comfort and protection from cold chill during wintertime. However, when using goggles, the peripheral vision might be reduced a little.<\/p>\n<p><em>I use the Finsterwalder-Charly <\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.finsterwalder-charly.de\/html_eng\/helme\/insider.php\">Insider helmet<\/a><\/em><em> and <\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scott-sports.com\/gb_en\/product\/9992\/52149\/218166\">Scott Safari goggles with a face mask<\/a><\/em><em>. The combination has been very good. The goggles are vented and they are not prone to fogging in-flight, although they may fog without airflow, ie. when walking on ground with the glider wearing the helmet and goggles. The face mask prevents cold wind entering to the face and protects face in case of emergency. It also blocks the wind from the microphone which helps reducing noise. Using the mouth-throttle of the Mosquito with the facemask is no problem. The Scott goggles limit the peripheral vision a little but it is not too distracting. With the helmet I use a hood which covers my neck and keeps my helmet clean as the hood is easily washed after use.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hearing protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The powered hang glider is not the most silent piece of machinery there is. Without special silencer the powered unit is able to produce noise up to 110 dB, measured at pilot&#8217;s position. The additional silencer reduces the noise greatly. In addition to the engine, the propeller that spins nearly 3000 RPM, is also quite loud. When airborne, the wind &#8221;pushes back the noise&#8221;, reducing it even more. When airborne, the sound that pilot hears (through his helmet and earplugs) only smooth, calm buzz which is actually is quite comfortable. The noise level after hearing protection is similar to a car. Radio and sound output of the variometer can be heard clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Due to high noise levels, hearing protection is mandatory. The helmet reduces the noise is a little but it is not enough. With full-face integral helmets, ear plugs are the only option for protection which are sufficient for the task. With them the noise levels are not distracting or harmful. In fact, with ear plugs the noise level could even be a bit lower than noise from the wind when flying a unpowered glider without earplugs.<\/p>\n<p>With the soaring trikes and open helmets usage of hearing protectors is possible and many helmets for this purpose have built in ear cups.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Clothing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-312\" title=\"IMG_0173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_0173-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_0173-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_0173-140x105.jpg 140w, https:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_0173-196x147.jpg 196w, https:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/IMG_0173.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hang gliding does not require any special clothing to be used. During warm summertime clothes you normally wear are enough. During wintertime clothes that are suitable for downhill skiing or riding a snowmobile are also good for hang gliding. When selecting clothing, it should be kept in mind that when on the airfield the temperature may be 25 degrees of celsius, at 2000 meters the temperature is only ten or so degrees. The clothing should be warm enough, but comfortable. The clothing must allow the take-off run to be performed, so over-clothing is not a idea too good. Harness the pilot wears, is made of wind-blocking cloth which helps to keep the pilot warm. If the clothing features some removable parts, such as a hood that is kept in place with buttons, they must be removed as everything that comes loose, will end to the propeller, damaging it.<\/p>\n<p>A special care must be taken when choosing gloves. They should be made of wind-blocking warm material. The gloves, however, must not limit the movement of fingers if altimeter, radio or camera is used. It is always a compromise. The gloves must not have too much friction as a too good grip will prevent hands sliding down the tubes during take-off which may make the angle-of-attack to become too big which results in problems.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes have to support the foot during take-off and landing. As the pilot must be able to run at moderate speeds in both phases of flight, this must be taken in consideration when selecting shoes. Shoes made of water-resistant but breathable material are recommended for winter.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wristwatch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although the flight instruments generally have a built-in clock, a wristwatch with timer migth come in need. The timer functionality helps memorizing flight-time and estimating the remaining fuel and endurance, time to reach the airfield and fuel required. The flight control may also be interested in your estimated time to arrival. Although I normally don&#8217;t wear a watch, I used\u00a0to fly with <a href=\"http:\/\/processors.wiki.ti.com\/index.php\/EZ430-Chronos?DCMP=Chronos&amp;HQS=Other+PR+chronoswiki-pr\">Texas Instruments Chronos<\/a> sports watch. The Chronos, originally created by <a href=\"http:\/\/bm-innovations.com\/\">BM Innovations<\/a>, is a promotional product of TI, meant for a development kit for their MSP 430 microprosessors which power the watch. The Chronos features a precision altimeter, high quality accelerometers made by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vti.fi\/en\/\">VTI Technologies<\/a>, a wireless communication link for data transfer and a user-upgradeable firmware. The precision altimeter is a nice thing to have as a backup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-621\" title=\"Nokia 9300i Mosquito Edition\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urheiluilmailu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/toast-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mobile phone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A very recommended to keep in a pocket, preferably with a full battery. Except for emergency, the telephone is good to have for calling to friends to get you from the field back home if you did not make it back to the airfield. \u00a0The telephone should be placed so that it can be reached easily, even wearing the harness. When choosing the phone the pilot should think about his requirements and the robustness of the device. Large touch-screen devices require much more careful handling. An Internet-enabled mobile device is handy for checking weather forecast, bulletins etc.<\/p>\n<p>However, ideally the phone should be placed so, that the pilot can get rid of it easily, in case of an overheating lithium battery.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Knife<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The knife attached to a downtube of the glider is mandatory when flying a towed glider. The knife is used to cut the towline if it gets stuck or if the release mechanism malfunctions.
